All my friends are having babies! I’m hoping to become the old (but young) lady who makes quilts for all the babies whether they like it or not. I remember getting a lot of knit socks from my grandma and now I understand why. I wasn’t planning on counting each of the baby quilts as one of my 100 quilts but I had a lot of aha moments with this one.

When I first started quilting a friend of mine said that my quilts must be so warm and soft. I gave him a blank stare because I realized they weren’t. Since then I’ve been on a mission.

Finally a warm and cuddly quilt!

Here’s what I learned with this quilt:

  1. Batting: Quilter’s Dream Cotton Supreme

Up until this point I’ve been using bamboo batting, which I love. It makes a really nice spring/summer quilt. I plan on using it for babies born later in the year. In my quest for something warmer, I recently tried a high loft polyester batting. It was a failure, I couldn’t quilt with it. Then I tried a wool batting on #13, I liked the loft, but it still wasn’t warm and drapey enough. It also had a farmy smell when I washed it.

Finally with this quilt I tried Quilter’s Dream Cotton Supreme batting and it’s perfect! It’s a hefty, very warm, and dense batting that has 1/2 pound of cotton per square yard. I want to use it for my next me sized quilt.

  2. Backing: Organic Double Gauze

I thought the backing might make a difference with the drapeyness as well. I was worried that the double gauze would be too soft and pucker. It did pucker a little bit, I think next time I will try spray basting and starch (I can’t believe I’ve never tried either of those things). I prewashed it which I normally don’t do, but it shrinks about 5%. At some point I will try to make one of these without prewashing and see what happens.

I was so happy with the texture and softness of the end result. Plus, it’s organic cotton, better for the babies.

  3. Binding: Printed Fabric

I’m usually a solids girl when it comes to binding. None of the solids I had were really working so I looked through my scraps and found some fabric with with splatters on it. It looks great and now I’m questioning everything about myself.
